A parent in North Andover, Mass. is not happy after she got a school letter about her son. It wasn't about his grades or his behavior. It was to inform her and her husband that their son was classified as "obese."
The letter is part of a state initiative to monitor children's Body Mass Index. The letter explained BMI standards and encouraged her and her husband to contact their pediatrician.
It turns out, many parents get these letters. They’re nicknamed the "fat letters", but it’s not just overweight kids who get the letters, underweight kids get them as well. A lot of parents have complained and say the letters amount to government interference in parenting and invasion of privacy.
